The movie is based on the book by Hesse- which is very good. If you haven't read the book, I recommend it. It is an easy read, and a good read. Now on to Tykwer's movies- Winter Sleepers is a story about several peoples' lives (and some deaths) and the effects that stream out from various causes. Run Lola Run is also about cause and effect. It's a frenetic journey with Lola who is trying to raise money to save her boyfriend. Throughout the movie time streams out to show what happens to the people she meets- what happens to them because she interacts with them- again- cause and effect. In Princess and The Warrior cause and effect are also at work. Our heroine is a nurse at a mental hospital. our hero causes a terrible crash, in which the nurse is pinned under a truck unable to breathe- our hero makes an emergency tracheotomy to save her. She feels a mystical connection with him, and hunts him down- unfortunately he's a victim or Traumatic Stress Disorder- the rest of the movie is about the healing power of her love. The movie has the clarity of a fairy tale, imo. Like all Tykwer's movies the cinematography is beautiful- hyper-real, is the only way I can think to describe it in places. The new movie Heaven is also a fairy tale. Again the movie deals with unintended causes. This seems to be a common theme in all Tykwer movies. Heaven is about a woman who plants a bomb to kill the drug dealer who killed her husband. She tries very hard to kill only him- but the bomb goes astray, and kills 4 innocent people. A translator at the Carbineri headquarters falls in love with her, and rescues her. I won't tell you how it ends- because you might want to see it, and I thought the end was very beautiful, and I wouldn't want to ruin it for you, in any way. Watch for the scene under the tree at sunset- it is so beautiful, so idyllic, so emblematic of Adam and Eve, I will never forget it.
