It is better to die than to voluntarily kill innocents. This is part of the Warrior's Code. Tough row to hoe but nobody said it would be easy. Easy is for wusses

The Israelis, with few exceptions, do not voluntarily kill innocents. Everyday, they face the choice of waiting for their enemies to carry off an attack or carrying the attack to them. They use intelligence to try to limit the casualties to the fighters. It is not possible to succeed 100% in this. The US doesn't succeed 100% either - in fact, most reports I've read say that US forces typically cause more collateral casualties than the Israelis - but somehow, the Israelis are supposed to be the model of military purity for the world. Against an enemy who attacks the weak and cheers.

If the Israelis didn't care about 'collateral damage', they could just carpet bomb the whole area and make sure of getting their man. They don't do this.
