"The point here is that world oil supplies are not some finite constant sum"
Well clearly that is not literally true....

His info regarding the Caspian sea oil bonanza is a bit outdated.

"In the early nineties the Caspian seemed to be the next Middle East. In 2001 we had 20 out of 25 dry holes that dampened the enthusiasm for the Caspian significantly. In 2001 Kashagan was finally discovered, deemed to be the greatest field in the decade. In 2002 BP and Stat Oil quietly sold their 14% of Kashagan for 800 million dollars. In 2003 British Gas put their 17% on the block for 1.2 billion dollars."

John,

Be careful with this guy Yergin. He's a crook. He recently was on national television (CNBC) lying about the potential for oil in Iraq and Canada. He downplayed the importance of the easily liftable and light, sweet reserves of Iraq, in order to make the lying thieves of the Bush White House appear less criminal.

And then he added a whopper, claiming that Canada had greater reserves of crude oil than does Iraq. This total chicanery was based on a deliberate confusion of ready reserves with ultimately recoverable reserves, and a confusion of light, sweet crude with oil sands!

I was astonished that a sophisticated man like Yergin could be so completely and deliberately dishonest. But then, he's a paid whore for GE, NBC and the Republicans. Fortunately, some important voices are starting to call these liars scoundrels and worse:

hi John,

Daniel Yergin from CERA sees that dynamic as being much more complex, and possibly not so certain....

i would like to point out that Yergin, a non-scientist, is not exactly the most highly regarded person in the world by the petroleum geologists concerned about peak oil who rely on science and not fantasy for their arguments. i don't have time to go into detail now, but i would refer you to an excellent article which totally rips apart all of Yergin's arguments.
