Ilmenite has a waste problem in processing. Not all companies are going to rutile simply because there is not enough of it. It would be nice to find a billion ton 35% rutile deposit, but there aren't any. There are however a few hugey ilmenite resources. Ilmenite may be chlorided too, and the waste problem can be dealt with if round trip from smelter to mine is not far. Roasting is not actually that expensive. The QIT Mine/Sorel plant is dual product and is quite profitable for Rio. I believe it is their most profitable operation.

My thinking is that the Havre Ste. Pierre operations will be with us for a while. The only question is, will anybody else besides Rio have the wedge to get in there and compete?
