And that if one really wants to reach understanding of ideas, one first must reach understanding of the words used to describe those ideas.

If one really wants to reach understanding of ideas, one must avoid being distracted by the meaning of words or argumentative about the meaning of words and listen actively to the spirit of what's being said regardless of the words being used.

There was an item in today's Post that reminded me of this discussion about knowing and believing. It was about an affirmative action advocate. The activist's point is: "The reality is that color still matters in this country. It still does. And we certainly don't advance the ball by pretending that it doesn't." I would submit that we don't advance the ball by continued forcing of the "mattering" of color but by pretending it doesn't matter--or at least not hyping the "mattering," until the pretense fades into reality.

Thusly we have two perspectives on two issues...
