Peter Fitzgerald is not running for re-election in Illinois next year and it going to be difficult for the GOP to retain Fitzgerald's seat. Former Governor Edgar, who could have had the nomination and probably the election for the asking, took a pass. The GOP has a gaggle of four or five millionaires, including a Sikh named Chirinjeev Kathuria, who all have professed a willingness to finance their own campaigns. My early favorite is Mr. Kathuria, who wears the traditional turban. His candidacy would certainly be a good education for the electorate.

The state GOP has been decimated by a series of scandals that will eventually engulf former Governor George Ryan. Ryan deserves to go down. I have always felt that his repeated trips to Cuba were in preparation for a request for asylum. <gg>
