It's unfortunate if anyone was hassled in France or the US because of their ethnicity or nationality. I have been to France twice in the past few months, told everyone we were Americans (my French certainly has enough American accent for anyone to know) and had a wonderful reception. One long weekend with a bad car battery required numerous jumps from strangers at gas stations, etc. No one ever hesitated to help.

Painting gross stereotypes of any country is dangerous, especially when you use the talk-radio trick of cherrypicking one or two anecdotes and stringing them together into a melodramatic conclusion.

Personally the whole "politics of international destruction" (to recoin the phrase) is repugnant. I hope both sides learn to rise above it.

But I am not very optimistic. I learned in the Balkans that the more insults fly, the more hardened the rednecks become. Must be human nature.
