There is nothing in the culture that prevents or even hinders a reasonable degree of assimilation ... on the contrary, most mexicanos are mestizo, which means 'mixed' or 'crossbred', and proud of it .... there are a few idiots who misuse the term La Raza, well really that came originally from Vasconcelos' piece 'La Raza Cósmica', which was a celebration of the ability of humans in these Americas to mix, to make a new culture ['race' is not the best translation of raza in this case], that would be superior to the old ones, more advanced ... true enough, he did have a thing about the anglo world versus la hispanidad, but in that he was a product of his times, you can look past that, and see more, apply his principles further

México has a population of about 104 millions resident today in the country [a much lesser figure is quoted upthread], and there are 10-12 millions resident in the US ... about a third of whom are indocumentados, 'mojados' ['wets'-g-] ..... and, a few in Canada, one estimate i heard for BC was around 50,000, no idea how accurate it might be

As for learning english, it is stupid not to, even if you never plan to go north of Villahermosa ... i preach this all the time, have for years, in strong terms .... same goes the other way, i think a person living in the California to Texas belt, even well beyond that, is really missing quality of life without a decently fluent level of spanish

Lately we hear lots of anecdote about there being less work now in the US than there was two or three years ago, and people going back home .... might not be a trend overall, don't know .... but that's a thing forgotten by some, that these people are going to where the work is, it's true free enterprise in action, 'find a need and fill it' .... and underlying all, each is aware that he remains right here at home on the continent of his ancestors, minding his own business
