1988. By my recollection, at that time, we (the US, that is) were allied with Iraq against Iran. Does that make us a threat to civilization as we know it too? For some reason, Eurasia and Eastasia come to mind.

Then there's the issue of "the moral equivalent of the founding fathers" from that era, but that is, as they say, another story, albeit somewhat more relevant to the 9/11 saga than Rummy's Iraq propaganda offensive.
