The Republican party would have to totally change to lure Californians. Maybe a moderate Republican could squeak out a governorship against a weaker Democrat, but otherwise -

The GOP would have to become environmental, reach out to minorities in a real way, not just rhetoric, would have to champion high-tech, leave gays alone, support womens rights, be willing to legalize meical marijuana, support a huge clean fuels program, distance themselves from the religious right an the Texas oil companies, etc. All just the opposite of what they're doing now.

GOP moderates espouse at least half of the above issues. Right-wingers despise them all.
