They will not be officially worthless until the judge bangs his gavel. That could take until the fall, so during the intervening period, the stock will likely be "volatile". Usually folks who have shorted "take their leave" well before the stock hits zero, although I know guys who do hang around until the bitter end.

You don't have to cover your short when it goes completely away. The beauty is you don't pay taxes on it until you cover, or until your brokerage zero's out the position. I am still short Teligent and Williams Communications, if the broker zeros them out this year then I pay taxes this year, if not, it will be whenever. Actually I should check to see if they are taking up margin. That becomes the problem with riding cheapie positions all the way to the beach, you are tying up a lot of margin for little gain.
