If the 1990's were the "politics of personal destruction" the 2000's are shaping up to be the "politics of international destruction". International discourse has disintegrated to Geraldo-style pissing matches complete with chest-thumping posturing and crap-slinging in ever growing quantities.

It's really sad to see after we invested a decade in building a manageable post-Cold War world order.

My guess is that America will play less and less of a role in Europe - which is a good thing with the current American attitude toward the rest of the world (i.e "my way or the highway"). I see that the EU told Bush to go jump on the GMO issue (maybe calling the Europeans stupid wasn't a great diplomatic tactic). No one who opposed the US on Iraq has given an inch on the issue subsequently.

Let the Europeans focus on the integration issues that will play the biggest role in their future. The US can go off on its own crusades unnoticed and unneeded. It's clear that US foreign policy has very little to do with building cooperation now, and a great deal to do with pandering to the Bubba electorate.

The problem with these mythical BS "clashes of civilizations" is that they can only end three ways - annihilation, subjugation or coexistence. No major group in the world today is in a position to destroy another; now we know that even the most belligerent actor can't effectively subjugate even a limited portion of another group; so coexistence is the only outcome.

Let the jingo-jangling chest thumpers play their games and talk their trash. The rest of the world can rise above that and work on a higher standard.

Trash talkers tell you where most of the trash resides - at their home address.

How dare you compare Lolo Ferrari to Anna Nicole Smith. Anna married into a respectable family after struggling as a single mother proving that dreams can come true in America if one works hard enough.

In Europe for money to be clean or good one needs to have it bequeathed by either the government or inheritance. Anna earned her money the old fashioned way and I can understand why that bothers you. In America dreams still can come true!
