Oh, I'm sorry. The telephone switching office heiarchy historically was broken down into five 'classes". Class 5 was the local switching office, the ones that have customer lines attached to them. There are more of these then any other office. Class 1-4 offices are tandem switches, that is they handle traffic from other offices, they don't have customer lines attached. A class 4/5 office serves both the functions of a local office and a tandem office.
The significance of Santera sales in this market cannot be understated. First, while TKLC has done great in the STP market, this market is much smaller than the switch market. A single pair of STP's might provide signalling functions for 100 or more clase 1/5 switches. The switch market in the US has been owned by Lucent and Nortel with some small success by Siemens and Erickson.
Cantera makes a new generation classs 4/5 switch that utilizes both circuit switched and packet switching technology. When I read this I thought 'well good luck breaking into the Lucent/Nortel market. Many have tried and failed"
This sale then (as I see it) is a bigee. Now if TKLC can make a sale in the US I will really be a believer.
I hope this helps.
While I know the technology I don't really know much about Cantera. Have they made other sales?
