A plunge in Japanese interest rates deeper into negative territory on Friday could spell more trouble ahead for the volatile U.S. Treasury market as it suggests Japanese investors are having trouble raising dollars.

A surge in demand for dollars by Japanese banks in the currency swaps market, combined with reluctance of foreign banks to borrow yen, pushed down the euroyen overnight rate in Tokyo to as low as minus 9.0 percent -- a world record negative rate.
