As opposed to criminals counterfeiting, printing money and then going and spending it, our banks and governments do account for each note issued as loans and keep a balance of the debt. So it's a little different. -g-

The word "counterfeiting" does come up on discussions of money though. Leaving aside some of the more nutball web sites..
