Democracy, Neocon Style At the time that Turkey's parliament refused entry of the US military, I was struck by two things. One was the irony that while we were supposedly on a mission to establish an Islamic democracy, the parliament of the only existing Islamic democracy was voting no. The other story current at the time of the parliamentary refusal, was that the American negotiating position on the troop transferal was preposterously rude, and resulted in anger by most Turks that were familiar with the particulars. If true, this is one more indication of the hubris of Mr. Wolfowitz. Longer term, it is interesting to watch modern Turkey. Astride the Bosporus, it is being strongly pulled in both directions simultaneously. Meanwhile, there are many restless non-Turkish populations living within Turkey’s borders. lurqer
