So far, enforcing UN resolutions doesn't appear to have been a good reason to go to war. Maybe when the WMD turn up . . .

This is obviously one of those issues that is not clear cut. After all, Desert Storm was little more than enforcing a UNSC resolution against Iraq and we found that to be a good enough reason to go to war. And from my perspective, that war, and the most recent one, cannot be separated from one another.

Personally, given the fact that Saddam invaded and annexed Kuwait as part of Iraq, I believe that his case warranted military action.

His non-cooperation and continuing intransigence in the face of UN inspections was creating a VERY dangerous precedent that a despot could engage in imperialism and essentially not risk anything. After all, Hitler and Tojo were able to launch the world into WWII, but only at the eventual cost of their empires and their lives. Saddam found that his life wasn't at risk (until March 19, that is) and that the UN wasn't likely to have the spine to continue confronting him. Not when he was dangling billions of dollars of potential oil revenue in front of their faces.

So I have to disagree... Binding UN resolutions, issued as a response to naked, imperialistic, aggression MUST BE enforced, even to the extent of requiring regime change. Otherwise, the UN might as well close its doors and become another League of Nations.

But I understand your perspective as well, CB...

Hi CobaltBlue; Re: "Makes me wonder whether people who wanted Saddam deposed faked [WMD evidence]."

This is a great example of the American public slowly waking up to what a disaster the Iraq war was. While CobaltBlue is still claiming that it was a good thing, the increasing costs may convince her otherwise. And that is where the disaster for the Republican party arises.
