I don't know his music well enough to comment. And I admit, I did not bother to look him up. But many of my students told me I HAD to see 8 Mile. So I will. I promised them I would give it a try.

I think we have to be careful when we market "art" to children. Truth is wonderful (but also variable, imo). The 9/11 hijackers had a "truth", but I'm not sure my children are old enough to evaluate that truth (in fact many adults can't do that)- and I know my high school students would not be able to evaluate it- because they are so lacking in skills to evaluate anything. So while I believe in free speech, and free expression, I worry about the impact of that free expression on children- because they are less able to evaluate the problematic elements of certain "truths"- and where there are many truths to choose from, they may pick truths that are ultimately destructive (as, of course, many adults do- but children are inherently more vulnerable- so why expose them to the worst, when they are the least capable of dealing with that exposure?). While I think rap has a lot to say to adults (as in THIS IS a WAKE UP CALL- this is The Fire Next Time)- I'm not sure children get any message aside from "Violence is cool/ this guy is famous/look how he treats his women/" etc.
