That is a key point.

But I would say the larger issue is the so-called 'Bush Doctrine' of *preemptive* unilateral invasion of countries that are deemed a threat to us. I believe this doctrine must be re-invented as an international doctrine; the international community must not tolerate countries that threaten world peace.

One immediate problem is that if the Bush Doctrine as it stands fails (as it appears destined to), it may actually increase the danger from a bigger theat: North Korea. If Iraq does turn into a quagmire, America may head back into isolationism as a defense, and allow North Korea and others to develop truly horrific and viable WMDs.

This is not a partisan issue; it is an issue that affects us all equally. I personally supported Bush in the war because of assurances that Iraq posed a clear and present danger to us. Now that it appears we have been duped (by whom will be determined), the viability of the Bush Doctrine is questionable in its current form. Re-invented with full UN participation seems to be the only way to rescue the idea of removing threats before they reach lethal levels.
