Spin doctors know they are distorting the truth to advance an agenda. Most of the rest of us just practice selectivity despite the fact that we are trying to be objective.

As a human being, I want to know all the facts so I can make up my own mind what happened using a process of triangulation.

As a lawyer, I take the first version of the truth, the client's, and shape it to meet the objectives of the client, not my own objectives. I don't tell lies, I just pick the facts that are helpful and leave out the ones that don't help, even important facts. I still want to know all the facts because facts have a way of biting you on the ass.

Political spin doctors, who can't be disbarred for lack of ethics, go even further and deny the facts that don't help, and make up facts that do help.

History, on the other hand, happens to a lot of people, and the historian picks and shapes the narrative but can't make up new facts, deny the truth, or even leave out important facts.

Josephus, who worked for the Romans, doesn't speak well of the Jews who revolted against them. We don't have the version told by the losers to compare it to.
