If you want we can have a contest, you can name famous Republican segregationists, and I'll name famous Democrats who were segregationists. I wonder who'll win? Strom Thurmond recently died, but if I remember correctly, so did Lester Maddox (who to the best of my knowledge never became a Republican).

The left wing had its blind spots as well. Sam Gompers wouldn't let unions join his organization if they had asian members.
