Hawk, I'm not going to try to defend those views, because like you I think they are off the rails. But those seem to me to be why Osama gets the support.

Having a huge pool of unemployed and low paid males, as you say, in an alpha male dominance society gives him, an almost unlimited cannon fodder supply. They can be a warrior and martyr and go down in a blaze of glory, just like any number of innocent young soldiers sent to their dooms in a fight against the enemy invaders in all societies. It's as old as mammalian social territoriality.

Of course millions of Moslems prefer civilization, live in the USA and NZ and realize that Islamic Jihad isn't the road to Nirvana. But there are a billion of them, so finding the 1% who might be serious supporters isn't too difficult. Finding 20% who tacitly support the ideas isn't too hard either. Heck, you could get 20% of NZ or the USA to agree to all sorts of totally screwball mayhem. The strength of democracy is that the other 80% keep things reasonably steady.

Hitler was voted into power by about quarter of Germans. They got what they deserved.

Not all Americans are in favour of civilization either you know. The majority prefers the current rule by the sword [having the biggest sword for now, though a big sword seems not to confer immunity to insurrection]. Talk of the UN gets them foaming at the mouth and sounding like Islamic Jihadists. It's their way or else. People are either with them, or against them. Helen Clark became persona non grata in a short space of time after supporting the invasion of Afghanistan [with actual troops up in the mountains]. Deviate from the true path one iota and one is excommunicated and sent beyond the pale.
