"The key point is that it matters more now whether people hate us, and will keep mattering more, for technological reasons

Meanwhile, the neo-cons have a deliberate policy of trying to make the world fear us. They don't understand that in the internet age, the truth from a hundred years ago resonates with increasing force. In international affairs to succeed one must "Walk softly and carry a big stick". All the high profile swagger of the neo-cons gets for us, is a target painted on the back of our far flung military. Don't the neo-cons understand the obvious? People tend to get "rid of" what they fear. I say support the troops - really support the troops with a behavior that protects them - not sacrifices them. 'Course if your're Karl Rove, and all you care about is '04, then a few body bags don't matter. As long as the cameras are pointed elsewhere.
