"In many cases, the recipients are unaware of and/or completely indifferent to the criticism. That's the imaginary fallacy of Internet chat boards, that blathering something here against a person or group while hiding behind a pseudonym has some great meaning beyond a few K bytes of space on a Web site."

Fine. So how does that observation distinguish between YOUR blathering and the blathering of a lesser mortal?

"If I see an insult hurled, I will check what is said against what I know, and may look further to see if it's true"

It is hardly to be hoped that you are capable of always knowing what is "true"...or of always being in the "right"! Your comment is rather revealing though... :-)

"Fact is, most of the people and groups insulted on this board (not the posters but the subject matter) don't know and don't care about the rantings here"

So whatever rantings and insults you may have made are under-appreciated, I presume?

Although I do not like the analogy with pigs (because pigs are sensitive animals, and probably don't call each other names) there is that saying that sums up exactly what name calling does (when you name call with someone who is really enjoying the whole experience):
it's like wrestling in the mud with a pig, you get dirty, and the pig enjoys itself.

Now if you have two people who just want to get really dirty, even if you ask them nicely to stop doing it in public, the only thing you can do, without encouraging them, (imo), is to let them go at it and politely ignore them as they both get very, very dirty.
