I know Davis is unpopular but Issa's open support of the effort publicizes his background and far right views, which is the last thing the republicans need in this state. After all, why recall Davis now? Davis was the most unpopular elected official since Nixon at the time of the last election, and yet the republicans failed to oust him. So here they go again, putting money behind a recall effort with a guy (Issa) that has the same stripes as Simon did. All this does for republicans is push them even more out to the periphery of the mainstream as far as California politics are concerned.

Otoh if a moderate republican like Riordan was openly supporting the Davis recall, it might show voters that Rebublicans can have some perspective (as opposed to the current crop who make their raison d'etre into monumental issues like the societal impact of the Gay Pride Parade).
