Hours earlier in a separate incident Saturday night, attackers lobbed two grenades near U.S. soldiers guarding the Iraqi National Museum, the soldiers said. The Americans escaped harm but a neighboring store was damaged. There were no casualties.

"We do not know if it intended to hit our position or to hit that little store that is down there. Both grenades exploded near that store," Sgt. John Kuzar, one of the soldiers guarding the museum, told Reuters Television.

A U.S. military spokesman said the two wounded Americans from the convoy were evacuated to a military hospital. There were no details on exactly how the Iraqi civilian died.

Two military vehicles were damaged, the spokesman said.

U.S. forces have been targeted repeatedly in recent days by what senior military officials consider to be die-hard loyalists of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), whose 24-year rule was ended by the U.S.-led invasion in April.

At least 22 Americans have been killed by hostile fire since President Bush (news - web sites) declared major combat over on May 1. Two others were found dead in unclear circumstances on Saturday.

Six British military police were killed in the south of Iraq (news - web sites) Tuesday.

The attacks have also hit Iraqi bystanders. Friday two Iraqis were injured in a town outside Baghdad when a U.S. convoy was targeted by explosives.
