UN 2nd resolution needed 1 extra vote. Chile said wait 3 weeks and we'll go along with it. It appears Bushies never wanted the UN with us in the first place (probably so as to not have to share oil rights) and so they went unilaterally. Couldn't wait 3 weeks. Proves their real motives, to be so arrogant as to turn the UN into a problem not a solution.

"The coalition" is a bit of a joke as besides the UK, it was really just us.

The point is piss-poor prior planning for post-war Iraq. We could have had 150,000 Un Peacekeepers for free now, instead our troops are dying, overworked, over-qualified for police work, cant speak the language and largely demoralized. I feel awful for those guys.

Plus, there is no end in sight and no reinforcments coming. Have to admit it was one of the worst planned post-wars in history. And that's one reason we need the UN and broad coalitions.

The invasion was the easy part, especially since once again Bushies exaggerated the danger of Saddam and his forces were actually a pushover. No WMD's either.

This isn't just Monday morning quarterbacking, it's a major point that was made time and time again before the war. The Bushies claimed they had a smart post-war plan but they had nothing except a lack of a plan that would cost many-many US lives and dollars. No one has any idea how to put together an Iraqi government. And that means we have to occupy the place. A quagmire.
