I find the combination of Zone Alarm and Ad subtract software very effective in keeping my system clean off all pop ups and unwanted cookies.

My copies of both programs are fairly ancient, I bought a combination deal, either program may be sufficient now.

There are free versions of both programs. They need to be tuned to your personal setting to be effective, once set up though, really does make surfing the net more enjoyable. Sometimes I have to stop filtering Ad Subtract to gain acceptance to a web site, but two left clicks and it's done and I have cleaned up my cookie file again.

Are they popup ads or messages from Messenger ?

If messages, do the following:

Start
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Services
right click Messenger
Properties
If running, click STOP, APPLY, OK
Repeat above
Under properties, check Messenger startup status
If automatic, change to manual
click APPLY, OK

Here is a free way to eliminate pop-up ads. Turn off all scripting under custom security on internet explorer. Then add a few sites like Yahoo! mail, Hotmail, bank accounts, etc, individually to your list of "Trusted sites" - for which scripting is allowed.

Your computer will be much safer because malicious web sites can install things on your computer if you allow them unrestricted access to scripting.

I had a difficult time adding hotmail to my trusted sites and ended up adding a total of eight hotmail and passport web links to get it to work right.

I hope someone understands what I just said...
