...it was primarily their heroic defense to delay Hitler till the Russian winter which the Germans were unprepared for.

I thought it was Mussolini's failure to capture Greece (requiring Hitler to send German troops south to finish the job) which delayed Operation Barbarossa until late June, subsequently forcing it to extend into into the Russian winter.
