Well, I'll continue this for a bit, Mike. This last post is not a personal attack; clearly a disagreement. That I can deal with.

We disagree on the priority of issues. Let me see if I read you right. You don't care about the issues of affirmative action, gay rights, prescription drugs, etc. because they are minor set alongside the issues of "a fight." I gather you mean by that what the Bush folk call the "fight against terrorism."

If that's what you meant, then a couple of comments. First, about the Bush fight. I think you know my take on it. They are screwing up and doing so big time. They had an auspicious beginning after 9-11--country united behind them, attacking the obvious parties guilty of 9-11 (Al Q) and the folk protecting them (the Taliban). But then they let themselves get dragged into an irrelevant fight with Iraq, dragged by an ideological vision, not a practical, how do you stop terror vision. And we are going to be stuck with this one for a very long time. Not good at all.

Second point, under the cover of the so-called war on terrorism, the Bush folk are governing from the further right (just short of the farthest right). Agenda: bankrupt the federal government so the social welfare programs can be gutted, the ones which have helped alleviate poverty for the elderly; reallocate tax dollars to the rich who have been getting richer through the 90s; not help the states which are desparately underfunded and in need of assistance; provide no assistance for public education; forget the needs of the inner cities; and on and on and on.

So, as for the beer, as I put in another post to you, it looks for the moment, it will have to be in Maine or NYC. Maine is the vacation destination of choice for a while, not the Outer Banks.

I'm pretty much agreement with everything in your post, I've think you've totally nailed it, in fact, except one thing: I don't believe for a minute John will ever appreciate this kind of thinking.
