Then as now, a large percentage of men who are politically involved are involved in organized religion not because they are naive enough to believe the mythologies, but rather because our churches have evolved as nexuses of power in local communities, and those who disdain associating with churchmen are limiting their political reach.

If you examine the real nature of people who profess a lot of religious fervor, you'll find that very often the organizers of such affairs are connivers and con men with an agenda to gain wealth and power in this life, because they are too sophisticated to fall for the lie about an after-life in Heaven or whatever. Franklin Graham, his pere Billy and Pat Robertson are prime examples of the breed. All manipulators and con men.
