Hi Malcolm. Mandarin is hopeless because as they have just shown with brain scans, brains go flat out to use it, instead of cruising easily as in English. It's inefficient.

Not only that, it has missing links in grammatical forms such as plurals, tenses, verb endings. It's hopeless. Time for the scrap heap. Plus it's hard to type in it.

Easier isn't better. What can be communicated is what matters, and how easily that communication can be done. We could also argue that analogue and GSM are easier to make than CDMA, but CDMA is much more efficient and more can be done with it. The language of the airwaves will be CDMA, not analogue. So simpler Chinese grammar, like rap grunting, is simpler, but not better than complex, sophisticated and harder to learn English. Yes, I've taught English, and very successfully.

I meant Japan has in part abandoned Chinese hieroglyphics in favour of hiragana, not the spoken aspects of Chinese.

Even English is pathetic. It's just better than the even worse languages. Japanese is better than English in many respects, but still not good enough. Binary language, like Morse Code, is ideal. But like Esperanto, there aren't many of us can use it. Language is primarily a community of use tool. Inefficiency will be tolerated to enable communication. So, money x number of people = how likely the language is to do well.

China has lots of people but not a lot of money and the other 5 billion of us have English as the lingua franca. So Mandarin doesn't have a chance, especially as it's not a very good language. That's why China's bosses are getting people learning English flat out. They know where the money is and how to get it. Ramsey Su and Jay Chen know English and that has enabled them to milk the stupid Anglophones [who have more money but less brains].

I know you still think average intelligence is going down, but it's not. I know the theory that dumb people have more children than bright children, but the facts are that average intelligence worldwide is zooming up. If the theory doesn't fit the facts, it's the theory that has to go. If dumb people also had fewer children than bright people, I suppose it would zoom up even more.

Keep in mind that intelligence is just another tool for survival and if smart people don't have children, then they are unfit for survival. Except that increasingly humans are not individual survivalists, but part of a whole, like a nerve cell, mitochondria and cornea cell are just parts of a whole. On their own they are nothing. Our communities are becoming like living things in their own right. Non-reproducing smart humans are like non-reproducing worker bees - sure humans, unlike bees, have individual DNA, but the pool DNA is what matters and they are part of the pool which is forming the living entity. Just as mitochondria have their own DNA pooled with the DNA in our other cells.

Languages fizzle out as their community of use become irrelevant.

So Mandarin definitely will not be the world's universal language. Jay and Ramsey can conspire in Mandarin, then rampage out into the Anglophone world to pillage and plunder. But the rest of us won't learn Mandarin. We [most of us] are too stupid for a start to learn that as well as English. The Mandarin speakers who don't know English will be serfs for Ramsey and Jay. So, gravity is pulling in the direction of English.

American is efficient, has the numbers, has the money and therefore will win. Unless binary language or rationalized English takes over.

So the fittest in a society that makes sure that everybody has enough food to go on reproducing are the dumbest.

Malcolm, you are right to say that there is no evidence whatsoever that the Japanese had a tonal language. Maurice was out to lunch with that one.

Teaching English grammar difficult? Try French....
