I think that unless the "poll" is actually commissioned by some entity, then we have to assume it is a "question of the day" peopled by many people,

When a poll is reported it is reasonably assumed that the protocols were followed because it is the result of serious research.
The questions of the day are flagged with the disclaimer
"this is not a scientific poll/study"

Questioning the protocols of each reported poll is indeed a daunting task. And I agree, we should always "question authority". But it is not what is happening today.
