Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor - UN did pretty well, but need teeth to succeed - need US leadership PLUS UN peacekeepers. The slander against the UN put out by Bushies this past year really hurt us. We are paying the price now. In the Washington Post today a US Sergeant in Iraq says "this is hopeless, get us out of here". Peacekeepers would pacify things. They dont usually get shot at and we'd have thousands of Arabic speakers too. The US has very few Arabic speaking troops, almost none.
