It's journalistic courtesy to tidy up speech when putting it in print. Anacoluthon, parenthesis, and pauses do not lend themselves to easy reading.

Several right-wing reporters printed verbatim excerpts of testimony of alleged communist sympathisers during the HUAC hearings in the early 1950s, in order to discredit them - when someone hems and haws in print it conveys indecision or stupidity. This was done again by left-wingers during Watergate.

I think it shows a lack of respect for one's subject. BWDIK, our culture is becoming coarser whether I want it to or not.
