Hi Malcolm - I was able to invest in Japan using mutual funds while holding a real job.

I think soemthing like that would be possible now.

Buying an ETF, like the Japan i-shares EWJ, and looking at the chart for 10 minutes once a week would probably work well.

Japan has many long term problems, but they have exporters who sell popular products, even if they are made in China or elswhere -

Mazda
Sharp
Sanyo
Kyocera
Seiko
Epson
Hitachi
Matsushita
Fuji Film
Nikon

If you think of the Japanesse stock market as being home to some great multi-national coporations rather than a reflection of the Japanesse nation, you can see that the stocks can do well without solving the long term problems of Japan.
