Of course it is not difficult for one who admits to a personal and subjective interest in the matter. If I was there with my daughter I would have a different opinion as to who ought to live.

An Absolute Principle external to personal feeling or thought would (of course) be impartial. People, however, are not impartial. If they were it would be a world without love and without meaning. Morals are a human construct. Rules of conduct exist only because we do. There is no "morality" Universe that exists like some invisible ether as a substratum to the universe of physics. At least, it seems dubious...

I can imagine a (far fetched) scenario in which I would stay with my daughter and die together. That is why I wanted to get more of the unknowns dealt with. Maybe I am being a little hypervigilant, but I suspected there would be more information coming from under solon's sleave and so I was trying to get as much of that on the table up front as I could.

As you can see, solon is now suggesting that the cuffed man was some sort of good guy (himself) who was a victim of some treachery. That is not enough, all by itself to change my decision. But if I found, more details, like my daughter was injured or sick, or for some other reason unlikely to benefit even if I could get her to the food, I might give the cuffed guy the map. I haven't disagreed with solon that it would be a subjective decision based entirely on my opinion about what was the best course of action. For some reason he isn't getting that.

The crux of the discussion, is that I still see an objective set of moral absolutes that I would (and I think everyone would) use as a referent for their decision as well.
