Helping another human is not an attempt to change its fundamental structure within the heterogeneous set of human objects. It is to align the faulty human such that he can maintain his status within the set for a longer time. Merely because nature gives one a faulty gene does not proscribe our helping to ease the suffering that results of that gene (or combo of genes). It does not even proscribe our tweaking the gene, so long as our tweaking allows the object to remain in its fundamental biological set. It is merely an attempt to help the object remain in the set, unlike the wholesale redefinitions that are attempted with polygamy and homosexuality.
