I see your point but legitimizing the relationship doesn't condone the behavior or force the private sector to do anything. The private sector doesn't have to give marriage partners benefits, they choose to. It becomes much more manageable when the marriage partners have gone through a due legal process to legitamize their intent to be long term partners in home, family, and community relations. In the case of gays, it is too easy for fly by night room mates to claim to be 'significant partners'. I see that as a problem for our culture; one that could be alleviated by establishing a legal distinction between shack ups and long term partners.
