Yes, he had heard of the plagues. It wasn't the rats but their fleas that actually carried the plague.

He had grown up living in an older neighborhood with no rail lines near it and not on the edge of town. I bet in 25 years he had never seen a mouse. That vacant lot had high grass and was a perfect breeding ground for the mice.

I had a friend who rebuilt an older home and caught bubonic plague from somewhere in the house.
