QUAGMIRE
Quagmire watch.

The Pentagon press corps is trying to decide when the steady trickle of bad news from Iraq WILL WARRANT USING THE WORD "quagmire."

That would be the official start of the "Iraq as Vietnam" phase.

But the defense secretary says it's way too early for that:

["If you want to call that a quagmire, do it. I don't"]

Not a quagmire; not a guerilla war either.

He prefers the term "slowly evolving process."

As for me, I prefer to immerse myself in my library of optimistic pre-war sound bites:

["The liberation of Iraq will free the Iraqi people from what has been a nightmare, and we will hear from the Iaraqi people once they have been liberated on what life has been like."]

I remind myself that ... finding Saddam doesn't matter:

["If Saddam is separated from his police state, he's of no consequence."]

And my very favorite:

["These are Arabs...23 million of the most educated people in the Arab world who are going to welcome us as liberators. And when that message gets out through the whole Arab world, it is going to be powerful counter to Osama Bin Laden."]

Does that sound like Vietnam to you? Of course not.

But here is the REAL reason why the Vietnam comparison is bogus.

No draft! This is an all-volunteer military. And the word is out -- IF you volunteer, you may well find yourself in Baghdad fighting in the... "slowly evolving process."

No, this is NOTHING like Vietnam. This is a war you can boycott if you want to. This is a war where you can confess gayness and go home.

This is a war where the free market gets the final say. Unless they change the rules...

Thanks Dave Ross

I agree, looks-wise Kerry and Bush are a wash, though different. But Kerry is six inches taller, still performs macho daredevil sports like aerobatics, is the real thing when it comes to macho action (not just words) and is a whole lot smarter than GW as well. Mano a mano, Kerry wins hands-down as a mental and physical man. And Kerry is even older than Bush. The last thing Bush wants is to climb into the debate ring with Kerry. Gore was a much easier foe. PS - I disagree that Kerry doesn't do it for women. I've seen enough gushing over him to know. Clinton also had that effect in a different way. Bush really doesn't. He's more of a guy's guy. But not a "real man" like Kerry in terms of real bravery in his life.
