The real point is you dont use the military as your personal PR stunt set and extras and dress up like one of them like an actor playing a role. And you dont announce that a war is over when troops are still dying every day. Maybe if Bush were signing a surrender from the Nazis after WWII this would be appropriate, in a bi-partisan way, but the air-craft carrier stunt was just another well-crafted GOP partisan TV event which served as free advertising for his re-election bid. Bush also had the nerve to claim "politics can wait, I'm doing the peoples' business now" last week at a fundraiser, as he spends more time fundraising than any prez in history and each time he flies to a dinner it costs tax-payers a million bucks. The GOP machine knows it costs a lot of money to run so many TV ads that truth and fiction are completely blurred and image becomes everything. So that's why they're pushing for all the bucks. They know if they had to run on issues and performance, they'd lose, but on image maybe they can win. Maybe. But depends on the opponent. They could swamp Lieberman or Dean, but could they do the same with Kerry? Not nearly as likely.
