Even earlier, there was a movie with Henry Fonda called "The Best Man" that showed the disjunction between what is made public and what actually goes on. Heck, Spencer Tracy's "The Last Hurrah", a sentimental look at a machine politician, poked fun at making the rubber chicken rounds and saying the right thing for the right audience. But you are right, "The Candidate" was particularly acute about the way in which the candidate was packaged, and had the marvelous scene were he is losing it, and garbling everything in a fit of exhausted humor........
