orkrious, I have thought about this problem. Governments are guaranteed to get ugly under severe crises. The crazy things our Fed is considering are nuts, but they will do anything to save their system. I wonder if a brokerage house like Smith Barney which is part of Citi Bank could open accounts in their foreign banks for their US customers. Maybe a trip across the boarder would be worth considering. <g> I wonder what a Canadian Bank would want from a US citizen to open an account.

They can't seize your money in Monaco or Switzerland. I am not that sure about other jurisdictions. Just call Merrill Lynch, CSFB, Prudential, UBS, or Credit Suisse (international houses that have offices here in Monaco, off the top of my head), and say you want an account in Monaco. I don't see how they can say "No". They might not be able to get you out of the US tax system (i.e. you might have to pay tax on the money you make in that account) but they would get your money out of the US for sure. Alternatively, you could come pay a visit to the myriad private banks in Monaco, and transfer your money directly to Monaco - Banque du Gothard, Bank Von Ernst, etc. They are very discreet. You would have a numbered account if you like, and I highly suspect they would tell American authorities to take a hike if they were told to transfer, or even disclose, the contents of your account.
