Well, that might apply if the price were determined by property tax, but it is strictly supply and demand here. The problem in SV is that there is a very limited supply, and the tech industry pays pretty well. Drives the prices crazy (in cycles).

Your neighbors must pay *something* in taxes. I think the way it works is that the appraised value can only go up something like 7% a year, max. It's something that people can budget for.

Yes, taxes here are way too high. Yet, we still are faced with making contributions to our local public school for supplies, etc. In fact, this year, some schools are raising special funds to offset the loss by this years budget. Many schools have laid off their librarians; I know of at least one local school that raised $50K from parents to re-hire the librarian.

We need to stop subsidizing millions in mass transit that doesn't work, and stop the insane waste of money on the local level. I could go on and on about the idiots in San Jose politics, and their money wasting ways, but I'm sure this is the wrong forum for that. :)

You forget WHY Prop 13 was passed. Rapacious politicians and assessors had found a way around the voter's will to raise taxes and were on a rampage.

You think real estate in CA never gets sold? Of course it does! And when it is, it gets reassessed. In the meantime, the amount due is reasonable and predictable and cannot be increased at the whim of an assessor.

You think SVers pay no taxes? How about 8 3/4% sales tax and up to 9.3% of income in a high income area? You call this nothing? How is it that gov't cannot support itself on that big a slice?

Saying that property taxes are "low" (?) doesn't mean all taxes are.

Do you want to drive ALL business out of the state? What will the bureaucrats live on then? They're not productive citizens, you know.

I mean ZERO in property taxes now while continuing to use services.
Pray tell, how do they do this? I'd like to know. All real property has an assessed valuation and is taxed on that.
