I agree with you LindyBill. My entire family attended private school for generations. My niece is the 1st member to attend public school. So, for the past 6yrs I've had a chance to observe public education up close.
I have been absolutely amazed at the quality of human beings (not all, but far too many) who enter the teaching profession today. Many of the males are simply union goons who saw the gravy train & jumped aboard. They are the principal instigators when strikes are called. The catalyst for strikes is ALWAYS for the purpose of financially enriching the teachers, mainly to enhance their retirement medical insurance coverage. I would change my impression of the profession if I would once read that a teacher strike was called to reduce class sizes or to put pressure on the school board to enforce stronger discipline on students and therefore in effect on their parents.

My only reason for posting the "English is Difficult" article was to provide some humor. I strongly believe that all immigrants should be required to learn English, not only for their own sake, but most importantly to provide some cohesion in our ethnically divided culture. The Romans realized the diverse lands they had conquered needed a thread of cohesion in order to make them less volatile & easier to govern, they therefore decreed a state religion that was to be observed by everyone in the Holy Roman Empire. I'm not suggesting we should have a state religion, but I believe English as a common language would benefit the USA as a whole.

I was going to remark on that myself Bill. K-12 teachers like to style themselves professionals, like lawyers or doctors. One of my parents' friends was a HS teacher, and he was always blathering on about how they deserve to be paid more, because they're professionals (nose in air here.) They like the conceit that their teacher's union is the ABA or AMA.

There was a disproportionate representation of Ed majors in the Greek system in the colleges I've been to. Don't have anything better to do during the day between parties? Want to have a sure job with three months vacation a year and hard as hell to get fired? Guess I'll major in Ed. The worst took Elementary Ed, the easiest of all.
