>> And how long are you thinking we should be in Iraq these days, Bill? As I recall, you were always pretty open ended on that one. Decades, not years, perhaps? >>>
A question even GWB or Rumsfeld cannot answer precisely
My question is why do we have to leave Iraq? The new government, who could ask us to leave is not yet operating.
Our troops now there will be based somewhere at a continuing cost under the Military budget. We are pulling out of France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. So where will they go. Qutar ? South Korea?
Is there something wrong with having them based in Iraq, as long as we are asked to stay?
There is a lot to gain in good will and on behalf of our US companies who will be bidding on the many reconstruction tasks, provided our troops are reasonably well behaved.
The assumption that we have to leave is based on the idea that we are pictured as invaders rather than saviors, and I don't know who-all makes that assumption - it did not show up in the first ever Iraq opinion poll, that I recall.
We have troops stationed in a great many countries and there is no fear we are planning a take-over. Why is it different with Iraq, except our own guilty conscience for having to fight there?
It will be up to the new government, when they can get organized and sample unbiased public opinion, to determine whether our presence is welcome or not. To which there is no answer at present.
And I tried to say here, there could be more profit than loss by staying.
