8:22AM Silicon Labs upgraded at Lehman (SLAB) 29.55: Lehman upgrades to Overweight from Equal-Weight, saying the stock has underperformed peers due to handset inventories in China and expected weakness for the co; firm thinks expectations are lowered and that Q3 and 2004 targets seem reasonable, especially in the face of historical execution, and believes that there is also an ASP expansion story in their high-margin wireline businesses. Raises target to $35 from $30.

8:17AM Agere Systems upgraded at Lehman (AGR.A) 2.70: Lehman upgrades to Overweight from Equal-Weight, saying margin expansion and profitability are the next potential catalysts for the stock. Raises target to $3.50 from $2.50.

8:12AM Marvell upgraded at Lehman (MRVL) 38.16: Lehman upgrades to Overweight from Equal-Weight based on their belief that fundamentals remain solid as the co continues to take mkt share in storage ICs and is well positioned to continue to take part in the transition to Gigabit Ethernet; also, products in WLAN and consumer drives are new products that should provide continued top line growth into 2004. Raises target to $45 from $30.

8:09AM Broadcom upgraded at Lehman (BRCM) 28.55: Lehman upgrades to Overweight from Equal-Weight based on their belief that the co's core business has started to see signs of strength, with enterprise networking (31% of revs) likely to grow with the Gigabit Ethernet ramp in infrastructure while cable (19% of revs) has begun to grow after 2 years of sluggish performance. Raises target to $35 from $25.

8:06AM Piper Jaffray initiates coverage on select genomics stocks : Piper Jaffray initiates coverage on select genomics stocks, saying a separation of quality has occurred in the genomics sector that is only now beginning to be reflected in the valuations of the emerging winners. Initiates EXEL with a Strong Buy; AFFX, HGSI, and LEXG with Outperform ratings; and CRA with an Underperform. Firm sees MLNM, HGSI, EXEL, LEXG, MYGN (Not Rated), and ZGEN (Not Rated) as distancing themselves from the rest of the pack.

7:42AM Western Digital cut to Underweight from Neutral at JP Morgan (WDC) 13.15: Firm expects WDC shares to underperform the group based on near-term challenges and valuation. Notes that WDC is trading at 1.0x CY03 sales, above the prior 5-yr historical range and matching the peak valuation from 1997.

7:24AM Varian guides for Q2 (VARI) 36.50: Company issues preannouncement for Q3 (Jun), sees revenues of $208-210 mln vs Reuters consensus of $210.5 mln. Company now sees Q2 GAAP EPS of $0.29-0.31, but this does not appear comparable to consensus of $0.40 as guidance includes charges for union-mandated work stoppages, start up costs resulting from acquisition of Comtel, restructuring charges and foreign currency losses. VARI did not provide pro forma guidance.

7:08AM EMC announces preliminary Q2 results (EMC) 11.74: The Co announced its preliminary Q2 results with earnings per share expected to meet or beat by $0.01 its previous guidance of $0.03 per share. In addition, the co expects total consolidated revenues to be at the high end of its previously stated range of $1.425 bln and $1.475 bln vs. Reuters Research estimate of $1.457 bln.

6:58AM EMC to acquire LEGATO Systems (LGTO) 9.10: The Co announced it will acquire Legato in a deal valued at $1.3 bln in stock. The acquisition provides EMC with LGTO's strengths in heterogeneous information protection and recovery, hierarchical storage management, automated availability and e-mail and content management.

6:56AM Asyst wins multi-million dollar order to provide its 300mm automated material handling system to Singapore fab, UMCi (ASYT) 7.20: UMCi is a Singapore-based 300mm joint venture fab between United Microelectronics (UMC), Infineon Technologies (IFX), and the Singapore Economic Development Board's investment arm.
