Poll shows slide in backing for Iraq war
Tuesday July 8, 2:06 am ET

LONDON (AP) -- The number of people who believe military action in Iraq was justified
has fallen sharply, according to a poll published Tuesday, but about half those
questioned still thought it was the right thing to do.

The Populus poll for The Times of London showed that 47 percent of respondents
believed taking military action was right, compared to 64 percent who held the same
view in April. It found that 45 percent of people thought going to war was wrong, up
from 24 percent in April.

The poll also showed Prime Minister Tony Blair's ruling Labor Party narrowly leading
the opposition Conservative Party, with 36 percent of people saying they would vote
Labor in a national election, and 34 percent supporting the Conservatives. The
Populus consultancy interviewed 1,000 adults by telephone between July 4 and 6 for
the poll, which had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
