The last Republican to come close to winning in California was Bruce Herschenson, who is about as conservative as one can get. He was leading Barbara Boxer in the polls until the last week before the election, when the Boxer campaign pulled all the stops out and thoroughly trashed Herschenson. Of course, it didn't help his campaign that he was spotted at a topless joint just days before the election. But the Boxer people made it out to seem that Herschenson was there on the sly, when it was quite the contrary. He was glad-handing people on the sidewalk and didn't mind being seen there at all. Wasn't sneaky, but it was politically tone deaf. If he hadn't gone there he likely would have won that election.
